Project – Rolling Friction

Design a maze or use ramps or tubes to move a ball or mable.

My ramp was a long tube.  If the tube was too low the ball would not go far.

If the tube was too high, the ball would come out too fast and jump the wall.

With the tube in the middle the ball came out at just the right speed.

Aiming the tube can change the  direction of the ball.

Moving the maze walls also changes the ball’s direction.  The ball will follow the walls as it rolls and bumps against them.

I have a marble that works great.  It is smooth and fast.

I made two balls.  The first made of soft plastic from a Babybel cheese.

Ball made from cheese wax.

The second ball is made from plasticine clay.

The ball will travel to the end of the maze.  That is 2 meters rolling on the floor.

We did three tests. Watch the videos below.

On the hardwood floor the ball went the farthest.

Over a floor mat the ball still went far, but slowed down.

On the blanket the ball only went half as far.
